Hyundai Mobis Develops Electronic Ride-Height Control

Hyundai Mobis has revealed its Electronic Leveling Control (ELC) system, developed in cooperation with Hyundai Motor Company. The system can automatically adjust an electric vehicle’s ride height by up to 2.3 inches (6 cm).

ELC uses an electric hydraulic pump to control the vehicle’s height at all four wheels. Sensors detect changes in ride height while driving, while the system analyses driving speed and gross vehicle weight to automatically determine the appropriate ride height. The driver can also manually select a height level.

Raising the suspension can help protect floor-mounted high-voltage batteries from poor road surfaces. Lowering the vehicle can improve aerodynamics and potentially increase driving range, while also lowering the centre of gravity to improve driving performance.

For passenger vehicles, the system can automatically lower the vehicle when a door opens, making entry and exit easier.

Hyundai Mobis also plans a version using a front road-scanning camera and navigation data to prepare the suspension for upcoming potholes or bumps.

At the time of the article, Hyundai Mobis and Hyundai Motor Company were verifying the system’s reliability on test vehicles, with plans for market availability.
