BYD Yangwang U7: DiSus-Z Introduces Direct-Drive Electromagnetic Active Suspension

The DiSus-Z suspension on the Yangwang U7 replaces the hydraulic components of conventional dampers with linear electric motors. The motors generate suspension force directly through linear movement, performing the damping function while also enabling active control of suspension displacement.

Multiple sensors, including cameras and millimetre-wave radar, continuously detect road conditions. The vehicle’s computing centre processes this information and commands the linear motors to adjust suspension forces. According to the article, the system has a 10 ms response time, allowing rapid suspension adjustment even at high vehicle speeds.

Because the actuators can actively generate movement, DiSus-Z can also control the vehicle’s body position. Functions described include negative roll during cornering, pitch suppression during hard acceleration and braking, controlled suspension movement during jumps, dynamic levelling when mounting a kerb, single-side lifting and evasive manoeuvre assistance.

A further function uses the electric motors for regenerative suspension energy recovery. Suspension movement can drive the motors as generators, converting part of the vehicle’s vertical kinetic energy into electrical energy.
