BMW has patented a suspension-based system designed to make drift initiation easier by temporarily unloading the rear axle. The system uses adaptive suspension or active roll stabilization to move the rear unsprung mass sharply upward, briefly reducing the vertical load on the rear tires. This lowers available rear-axle grip and allows the tires to break traction with less engine torque.

Sensors would detect conditions indicating that the driver intends to initiate a drift, while vehicle speed, trajectory and potentially steering angle could be monitored to control when the system operates. The approach differs from conventional drift assistance, which primarily manages wheel torque, traction control or braking.

The concept could therefore make controlled oversteer easier to initiate while reducing the skill and torque normally required to break rear traction. However, the technology remains a patent application and there is no indication that BMW plans to introduce it on a production vehicle.
