**Canada-U.S. Auto Tariffs Take an Unexpected Turn**

Automakers were expecting recent U.S.-Canada trade talks to deliver some relief from the existing 25% U.S. tariffs on Canadian vehicles and auto parts. Instead, negotiations collapsed, and the Trump administration announced plans to **double tariffs to 50% from January 1, 2027**.

The development is particularly damaging for automakers with integrated North American production networks, including GM, Ford, Stellantis, Toyota and Honda. Canadian-built vehicles accounted for around 6% of U.S. auto sales in 2025, making cross-border production an important part of the U.S. supply chain.

The proposed deal would reportedly have reduced tariffs to 15%, broadly aligning Canada with the treatment of European and Asian imports. The higher Canadian tariff therefore creates a competitive disadvantage for North American production while increasing costs for manufacturers and potentially disrupting established supply chains.

Toyota and Honda are especially exposed because they account for a large share of Canadian vehicle production. Honda has already warned that the uncertainty could affect future investment decisions.

Industry representatives remain hopeful that a trade agreement can still be reached before the new tariffs take effect.
